Breast and Cervical Cancer

Breast and Cervical cancer are the leading causes of cancer related deaths among women. Every day, approximately 41 Nigeria women die from Breast cancer and 26 women die from Cervical Cancer. These high death rates are mainly due to late diagnosis of the disease which is mainly a result of lack of poor awareness, lack of organized screening and vaccination programmes.

In partnership with Grooming People for Better Livelihood Centre, H.E.L.P Initiative embarked on a programme to raise awareness, educate and organize screening  and vaccination exercise programmes for women in peri-urban and rural areas in Nigeria.  This programme was introduced in 2016 and since its inception, 65,611 women have been reached across 15 states in Nigeria namely Abia, Abuja, Akwa Ibom, Benue, Delta, Edo, Enugu, Imo, Kwara, Lagos, Nasarrawa, Ogun, Ondo, Osun and Oyo states.

The programme is delivered in two sessions. The first is an educative session on the disease, risk factors, signs, symptoms and the importance of routine screening. The second is a Voluntary Counselling and Screening (VCS) that involves one on one consultation with healthcare workers to provide information on the screening and what to expect. We also provide post screening support for women with positive results. These services include referrals for subsidized treatment, follow up services during treatment and psychosocial support for patients and carergivers.

Health Empowerment and Livelihood Promotion Initiative seeks partnerships to scale up this programme to reach more women in peri-urban and rural communities.
